Chundikkulam national park is a famous bird sanctuary which is located at the south eastern tip of the jaffna peninsula bordering the sea and lagoon fronts of Elephant pass. The park is a tranquil environment and enchanted with plenty of seasonal birds flocking together during the year.
Chundikkulam lagoon is partly surrounded by mangrove swamps and sea grass beds. The effects of the vast ocean and the rippling winds have carved sand dunes. During the migratory season , spanning from November to February , these dunes and the skies above become the major sites of activity for large flocks of birds , such as terns and gulls , flamingos , kites and sea eagles.
Birds all flock to collect the small fish lying on the shore from nets cast by fishermen which presents an ideal setting to capture their acrobatic movements. Mammals found in the park include leopard , sloth bear and deer. Mugger crocodile and saltwater crocodile have also been in the park.
